Missing Workouts

Family responsibilities can mean skipping workout training. Once again (it's a matter of priorities) your family should always take precedence over your training. There are a number of personal reasons when you can’t train away from home. The common cold, while not life threatening, should be attended to. The flu virus weakens the body, and intense training will only impede the body's immune response. We're sure other gym members will be appreciative when you refrain from spreading the flu around, so take a few days off from workout training and rest.

Lack of transportation may prevent your workout training. Most of us get around by car, but these wonderful machines are notorious for refusing to start at the most inconvenient times. If you drive an old clunker, you may spend as much time curling a wrench as you do a dumbbell. At times like this you'd better be acquainted with the bus schedule. Buses are inexpensive, comfortable, and usually very punctual. Taxis can be expensive, but you have to balance the cost with your eagerness to for workout training.

The most extreme impediment to workout training is a lack of muscle building training facilities, but even this difficulty of inability to train away from home can be circumvented. You may not have access to a gym, or your basement may be free of weights, but there is no such thing as no training facilities. Just think of all the exercises you did in high school gym class. With a little improvising you can use everyday items to keep in shape. Such exercises as sit-ups, pushups, dips between chairs, and no-weight squats are all excellent ways to maintain if not stimulate muscle growth. If you are handy with a blowtorch, an unlimited number of exercises can be at your disposal. Some of the biggest bodybuilders around got started in garages outfitted with homemade equipment. Often the source of metal was a scrapped car. If mechanics is not your trade, various isometric movements will keep your muscles firm and toned. Try pushing against a wall or support beam. With a rolled or twisted towel you can do all sorts of upper-body exercises, and the beauty is you can do these workout training just about anywhere hotel room, college dorm, your own bedroom, etc.

The bottom line is, no matter where you are or how limited the equipment, you can always find some means of workout training. Granted, it's nice to have proper facilities, but don't make excuses. The final reason to miss a workout is that we highly recommend it. Repeatedly subjecting the body to heavy weights even with good exercise style can play havoc with the body's joints and connective tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons). Most body-builders have minor aches and pains that they ignore and train around. Combine these conditions with the occasional bout of tendonitis, and the importance of taking an occasional break from workout training becomes obvious.

Many bodybuilders are afraid to take time off from workout training because they fear losing size or strength. This is a misconception, as a few days off will make no difference to muscle size or strength. In fact, taking a few days off allows your recovery system to catch its breath, giving minor injuries time to heal. After a few days' rest you will feel mentally and physically refreshed. Your enthusiasm level will be much higher, and all those little aches and pains of workout training will have disappeared.
