Those bodybuilders who are close to their contest weight or below it just do not have to worry about spending weeks dieting to lose weight. These bodybuilders too may have to go on an immediate pre-contest diet so as to loose fat and gain muscle or to convert those last few vestiges of fat that are still remaining in to muscle. The important thing for these bodybuilders is that several months before a competition they may actually need to increase their caloric intake in order to keep their body weight up. As the contest approaches they will then just loose fat and gain muscle.

But for those of us who do want to lose weight or to loose fat and gain muscle by burning off excessive fat in the months prior to competition, there are two levels of dieting to be considered:

1. Eight to twelve weeks before a contest reduce the caloric intake. Reduction in intake would be dependent on amount of weight loss required. The aim of this stage of the diet is to loose fat and gain muscle for not more than two pounds a week.

2. This is followed by a super-strict diet beginning three to six weeks before the competition to give you maximum definition and muscle definition. This is designed to rid the body of as much fat and excess fluid stored in the body and would result in you to lose weight.

Therefore, the key lies in planning to lose weight slowly but surely. The rate of loss being two pounds a week. When you want to loose fat and gain muscle at this rate, the amount of excess weight is to be calculated and dieting commenced at a corresponding time.
